After being demobbed from the army following the Second World War Fred Squire whilst visiting relations in Brompton came across a shop for sale in lower Victoria Road.
Once Fred had purchased the shop in 1946 with the help of his wife Doris, found an opportunity re-covering mattresses and furniture which at the time were in short supply, gradually expanding into carpets and soft furnishings as the world got back onto its feet.
After national service, Fred's son Anthony (known as Tony) also joined the family firm and trained to upholster and fit carpets and lino.
